IIT Madras Research Park endeavour to enable companies with a research focus to set up a base in the Park and leverage the expertise of IIT Madras. It is modeled the lines of successful Research Parks such as Stanford, MIT and Harvard. These technology parks have been known to add value and impetus to industry and business enterprises. The macro guiding principles behind the park are:

IIT Madras Research Park provides high quality infrastructure for companies to set up an R&D base. The Park will facilitate a collaborative relationship between tenants/ clients and IIT Madras. IIT Madras has always been on the forefront in collaborating with industry and the Research Park is expected to enhance this relationship further. Tenants will have the opportunity to tap the into the research wealth of one of the leading technological institutions in the country. The IIT Madras Research Park will enable the industry to leverage the specialized expertise of the faculty, utilize their research facilities, while providing part time employment and experience to the students.

The IIT Madras Research Park is situated adjacent to IIT Madras on an 11.42-acre campus, linked to the institute through an Over bridge. Its main entrance is through the IT corridor near the Tidel Park. The first tower with 0.5 million of space is functioning from March 2010 onwards with 24 R&D Clients and 11 incubatees .The additional towers totaling to around 1.6 million sq. ft are expected to be ready within a couple of years. Preserving the natural beauty and campus-like ambience of the area is our priority. You can be assured that a
well-planned infrastructure, abundant open space, well defined covenants, and carefully specified architectural design guidelines maintain and enhance your investment in a Park facility. The Park would, apart from the built-up rental space, provide standard infrastructure such as electrical fittings, central air conditioning, communication facilities and water supply. Other amenities would include substantial car parking space, dining space, business and conference facilities etc. Companies will be able to create their own signature style interiors and layouts to suit their needs. Cleaning and maintenance will be managed by the Park's administration.

Space will be allocated to established companies on rates as decided by IIT Madras Research Park and monthly maintenance charges based on actuals. An incubated company may be charged differently. Research Park tenants are expected to collaborative actively with IIT Madras. Each such interaction will be given certain points and the industry is expected to earn a minimum number of points depending upon the area that they occupy in the Park.

The Park is expected to house IIT Madras Incubator. Start-ups would be provided space, concessional rentals, technological support, financial support and mentoring. Some venture capalists, legal and accounting firms would also be given space in the Park to create an eco-system in which start-ups can thrive.

IIT Madras Research Park provides an infrastructure for research activities. It respects the IPR of its tenants. When the tenant companies take up R&D work along with IIT Madras, it will be as per the terms of agreement between the two parties (tenant & IIT Madras) and the IPR rights will be a part of such negotiated terms. Normally, IIT Madras allows all IPR to be assigned exclusively to the company based on pre-agreed financial arrangements.
