IITM Research Park Launches 1MWh Battery, Achieves 90% Renewable Energy; Hosts New Mexico Governor for Climate Tech Talks

Chennai [Aug 5, 2024 ] – The IITM Research Park officially launched the first-of-its-kind large-scale 1MWh lithium-ion battery storage system in the presence of Michelle Lujan Grisham, Governor of New Mexico on August 5, 2024. This technology, indigenously designed and developed by the Center for Excellence in Energy & Telecommunications (CEET) is a part of IITM Research Park’s 10x initiative, ‘Towards 100% Renewable Energy’.

Following this, a round-table discussion, further joined by Dr. Palanivel Thiagarajan, Minister of Information Technology and Digital Services of Tamil Nadu, was held with select delegates across industry, startups and academia focusing on climate change and renewable energy to devise strategies on how the Research Park and the United States can work together in co-developing technologies.

Industry leaders and startups from the Research Park, along with IIT Madras professors and subject matter experts shared expertise on sustainable heating and cooling, large storage batteries, hydrogen, solar, wind energy, sustainability, recycling, and cybersecurity for energy systems.

The Governor of New Mexico said, “We are moving as quickly and fiercely away from fossil fuels. We are in the technological race to the top in the transition. This partnership aims to ensure we are leaning to carbon capture and sequestration as well as demonstrate that we can accelerate opportunities for the private sector and education in the context of exchange.”

The Minister of Information Technology and Digital Services of Tamil Nadu noted, “There is huge potential for offshore wind in Tamil Nadu due to its extensive coastline. The government is working on policy, regulations, incentives, and infrastructure to facilitate improvements.” He commended IIT Madras and the IIT Madras Research Park as vital assets across domains for attracting investments, fostering innovation, and adding value through the exchange of ideas.

The discussions and introduction of the large-scale battery storage solution is an important advancement in India’s energy sector to end reliance on carbon emitting fossil-based sources and enable a complete transition towards a net-zero future. As buildings move towards installing their own renewable energy systems, reliable storage solutions are imperative and yet the unavailability of such technology remains a challenge, underscoring a critical gap. This ready-to-deploy and modular battery storage system, a first in India for a stationary storage system in a building campus (previously dominated by EV battery solutions), addresses this gap by facilitating a cost-effective solution towards an RE powered transition. Now fully operational, this energy storage system is fuelled with wind and solar energy and raises the campus’s renewable energy share to 90%. This will serve as a model for commercial complexes, and manufacturing units aiming to transition to entirely green energy while remaining profitable. IIT Madras Research Park has formed the “Zero to Green Alliance” to replicate this approach widely across the buildings and industrial sector and aims to drive action to accelerate
the transition towards a Net-Zero Future.
