Chennai, October 20th, 2022: IITM Research Park’s Centre of Excellence in Battery Engineering and Electric Vehicles (CBEEV), today announced the launch of its high efficiency Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) Electric Motor & Controller for E-Autos, tailor-made for Indian temperature conditions & terrains.
This indigenously developed PMSM Electric Motor & Controller was launched by Shri Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Secretary to Government of India, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), in the presence of Smt Sunita Verma, Group Coordinator (R&D in Electronics), MeitY, Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, IIT Madras Research Park and Shri Om Krishan Singh, Scientist D, MeitY.
Today, more than 90% of the components and technology for Electric Vehicles (motor/controller/ converter/Battery Management System/ charger) are being imported which are often unsuitable for the Indian climate, road and traffic conditions.
To address this challenge and increase local manufacturing, the 5KW motor has been developed and will be deployed through industrial partner Alphasine, with the specifications of a 48V Electric power train for E-Auto of IP67 Grade, sporting a motor efficiency of 94%, controller efficiency of 97% and functioning at a maximum operating ambient of 50 Degree Celsius.
Successful large-scale manufacturing of this technology can significantly make a difference to over 70 Lakh autos which contributes to more than 80% of the vehicles on Indian roads, while also combatting against 27 million tons of carbon emissions.
Designed and developed by CBEEV, the motor was supported by technology partner Motorz and was funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Govt of India under the programme on “Indigenous development of Electric Vehicle Sub-systems”.
Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, President – IIT Madras Research Park, IITM Incubation Cell & RTBI, said, “In India for a product to be successful, it has to be less expensive and better in performance than imported ones. Our 5KW PMSM motor is superior to imported motors in terms of efficiency and smoothness in drive. We have transferred the know how to our manufacturing partner, Alphasine Technologies. They will manufacture it at scale in a cost-effective manner.”
